5 Easy Tips for Business Owners to Sound Professional on Camera
I hate to break it to you, but you’re probably bad at talking to the camera. No matter what your friends might say, you come off as wooden and uncomfortable, and despite being an expert on the topic, you come off as unsure. But have no fear. If you are uncomfortable being on camera, people will watch that because it’s both relatable and real. People are going to look at you and think, ”Oh my god, he’s so endearing, he’s trying so hard.”
Know if your nervousness is making you incoherent, then that is a problem, and one that we can fix. Here are some tips to make sure your message gets across.
- Get to the point. If you can’t do chit-chat or fluff, don’t. Just say what you need to say and stop.
- Don’t look at the camera. If looking at the camera bothers you, don’t. Be interviewed by someone.
- Talk to someone instead of reading from a teleprompter. Reading lines is actually very difficult. Everyone thinks, “Oh if I have a teleprompter, it will be as easy as reading a book”. Record yourself reading a book and ask yourself if it sounds natural. If it doesn’t, record yourself having a conversation with someone else instead. You will come off far more enjoyable and engaging.
- Just have a sit. Most people, when they stand, feel like they are at attention. Their uptight. If you’re too uptight to talk, just have a sit… Yes, you might slouch, but you won’t come off as a robot, and that, to me, is a great trade.
- Cover yourself with B-Roll. If you interviewed yourself, and you still don’t like what you use. Take footage with your cell phone, to illustrate what you’re talking about. If you can’t shoot it yourself, hire someone. If you can’t hire someone, use stock footage. Cover yourself with Broll. Flashy Visuals are also always more appealing.
