What to do when making a new type of video?
I have a client asking me to work on a style of project, I don’t normally do… Can I do this?
This is the second time working with First Response Maintenance Solutions. The first video we made together was a piece for their website. It was a simple introduction video. The two owners explained what they do and then used accompanying B-Roll to illustrate what was being said… It’s a common order for me.
This time they said, “We don’t want any voiceover, text, just action. Energy. We want the audience to “feel” our work, not just understand it….” Okay, that’s a challenge.
what is the narrative structure of the video piece?
No matter what I’m doing, I first think about structure. What is the structure of the piece? In this case, it was… The client shows up on site, gets ready to do the work, does it, packs up, and leaves. It’s super simple and clean. Easy for the audience to absorb.
The client wanted high-energy camera angles. He gave me examples. At first, when I looked at it, it felt like the camera was moving everywhere. When I looked at it a 2nd time, I could see that the energy mostly came from the edit. Most of the shots were fairly controlled and well-framed. What did this tell me on the day? Ensure I frame my shots well, don’t get overwhelmed by “high intensity”, and get many angles.
Finally, was making sure the music was right. The client had a very particular type of music they wanted. Big rock guitar, lots of space in the music. They wanted the video to seem huge. The music is the soul of the video. I spent half my editing time just going through tracks, and finding the right one. But I did.
In the end, we made a video where the client was very happy with the work and already talked about the next one we’d be doing. If a project is different from what you normally do, don’t panic. Just break down what needs to be done.
